Intro
With a fast-growing population, a wealth of assets, over seven million annual visitors and a progressive vision for the future, Oxfordshire and its council make for a truly unique, exciting place to work. We’re delivering a transformational programme of long-term change to ensure our stability, resilience and even stronger outcomes for our residents.
Together, our plans form a one-of-a-kind project. And, as our solicitor for childcare, you can take on career-defining work and effect widespread change in a world-renowned part of the UK.
About the role
Working with our Deputy Principal Solicitor, you’ll take on a variety of legal work in connection with our childcare team. You’ll also provide sound legal advice and services across the council, complying with our procedures and high standards in the process.
Beyond your personal caseload, you’ll represent us in court and brief counsel when required. You’ll also mentor junior staff members and take on more complex legal work as directed by our Principal Solicitor.
Your skills and experience
You’ll be a qualified barrister or solicitor with an impressive knowledge of childcare law and other relevant areas of the law. Together with sharp analytical skills, you’ll have excellent communication skills and the ability to deputise for more senior team members - this includes managing and mentoring junior team members.
We’re also looking for candidates who are deeply committed to public service and willing to work hard to improve our offering. Ambition, creativity, and business acumen are all integral parts of making our efforts a success.

About Us
Oxfordshire County Council have a vision of ‘Thriving communities for everyone in Oxfordshire’ – a place where people want to live and work and be part of something different. To achieve our vision, we will:
- listen to residents so we can continuously improve our services and provide value for money
- strive to give every child a good start in life, and protect everyone from abuse and neglect
- enable older and disabled people to live independently. We care for those in greatest need
- help people live safe, healthy lives and play an active part in their community
- provide services that enhance the quality of life in our communities, and protect the local environment
- support a thriving local economy by improving transport links to create jobs and homes for the future
Oxfordshire must continue to be a great place to live and work, with more people enjoying a higher quality of life. Like any vision, it’s a long-term ambition rather than a quick fix.
