Planning Lawyer

Permanent Full Time position 37 hours per week

Team: Legal Services: Property, Planning and Non-Contentious

Salary Range: L (£41,881-£43,857) plus membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme

Location: Exeter, Devon

Exeter City Council is a highly ambitious and innovative authority in one of the most economically successful cities in the UK and has its sights firmly fixed on creating a City that is inclusive, healthy and sustainable.

The Council is building the UK’s first super energy efficient Passivhaus swimming pool and leisure complex, St Sidwell’s Point. We are also working with strategic partners towards our target of becoming a Net Zero Carbon City by 2030. We’re creating pioneering Passivhaus social housing and working with Homes England to deliver 12,000 new homes in the City over the next 20 years through the Liveable Exeter Garden City project.

We continue to deliver major projects like these, whilst delivering the day-to-day services that our residents and communities depend upon. That makes our Council a hugely exciting place to be.

With more challenges ahead, we are looking for talented people to support our work.

We are now offering the opportunity for an experienced planning lawyer to join the council’s highly regarded legal team in an exciting, dynamic and motivating environment.

You will play a key role working closely with the Council’s City Development department in realising the council’s ambitions for the City. More generally, you will provide practical planning advice, negotiate and draft planning agreements, and advise on enforcement and prosecutions. You will attend Planning Committee when required and provide advice and representation at planning appeals, inquiries, tribunals and the courts and instruct Counsel where appropriate on more complex matters. You will manage a varied caseload of routine and more complex legal cases, including high profile projects. Ideally you will have experience in a local authority environment, but this is not essential.

In return, we offer you the opportunity to work in Exeter and the work-life balance that comes with working in Devon. You will work in an environment which is stimulating and fast moving within a collaborative and supportive legal team. We will give you the opportunity to apply and develop your skills in the context of a high profile authority. We are particularly dedicated to the professional development of our legal team and career progression.

Finally, Exeter City Council offers a flexible working scheme, (including flexi time and home working), 25 days annual leave rising to 29 days after five years’ service, and membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme together with an Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.

We may consider a 4 day working week if desired for exceptional candidates.

We look forward to receiving your application.

The Closing Date for applications is midnight Sunday 7 March 2021

Interview dates will be confirmed.
