Specialist Lawyer – Governance – up to £67,449 total package

London Borough of Southwark

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a highly regarded legal team, delivering high level specialist governance legal advice and support to a major London council.

About Southwark

At Southwark, we cover an area that stretches from the vibrant riverside around London Bridge to the peace of Dulwich Woods, with more than 290,000 residents and a rich variety of communities. It’s this diversity that makes Southwark so special and it’s why we’re working with local people, communities and businesses to innovate, improve and transform public services, from housing and education to green spaces and leisure. As we start on this ambitious regeneration and growth programme, you’ll play a key role, providing specialist legal advice and guidance on a range of governance issues.

Your role

You will join a team of well-rounded lawyers providing high quality legal support to the council on a range of complex issues. As our go-to expert on governance, you’ll use your deep specialist knowledge to advise a variety of decision makers, up to the Chief Executive or Leader of the Council. You’ll also offer guidance and support to other members of the legal team including the Monitoring Officer, to help develop our knowledge and understanding of governance law. This will include developing strong working partnerships both inside and outside the council, as well as keeping up to date with changing legislation. You will have the ability to manage and develop other lawyers.

Your skills and experience

You will be a highly experienced solicitor, with an extensive record of handling complex local government governance work. As well as thorough knowledge of council processes, codes of conduct and the democratic process, you will also ideally have experience of review and investigation work. With an understanding of the political sensitivities of our work, you’ll be aware of the impact your advice could have for both the council and the communities we serve. This means you’ll need the ability to develop good working relationships with people both inside and outside the council and to explain complex legal concepts clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Whether you are already working as a specialist lawyer in this area, or you have detailed knowledge and understanding of governance and are looking for an opportunity to apply it in a more specialist role, we would like to hear from you.

Working at Southwark

Our vision is a fairer future for all in Southwark, and this applies to our employees as well as our residents. It’s an exciting time to join us as we set out to improve and transform the lives of people across our diverse borough. You’ll find an exciting, vibrant and supportive environment where you can build on your skills and expertise.

Apply

To ensure we are truly representative of the communities we serve, we’re committed to offering opportunities to people from a variety of backgrounds. So, we particularly welcome people from diverse and under-represented groups.
