The Legal Services Directorate of Avon and Somerset Police is offering a unique and exciting opportunity for a Senior Lawyer to join them and assist with leading and shaping the directorate and supporting the organisation and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner with their policing priorities.

Did you become a lawyer to make a difference but now feel disillusioned with chasing the clock every day?
Are you looking to change direction in your career?

This is a varied role where no one day is the same and we measure and pride ourselves on supporting the organisation’s objectives and values and not billable targets.

Our lawyers play a vital role in securing civil orders in the Magistrates’ Court, defending civil and employment claims against the organisation as well as providing employment advice, dealing with misconduct proceedings, inquests, judicial review and contract matters.

As a Senior Lawyer you will lead a team of lawyers and manage a caseload of predominantly operational and employment matters, providing real time advice to Officers on operational policing, including the use of police powers as well as proactively collaborating with officers to identify effective disruption tactics of criminal enterprises. We also support HR; advising on numerous employment matters such as queries relating to the Equality Act, grievances and contracts.

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

• Managing a team of lawyers, providing support and technical advice with the handling of cases, performance management and development.

• Assisting the Head of Legal Services in the delivery of department business plans, attending meetings and providing management support as needed.

• Taking the lead in primary work areas, providing legal advice and guidance to a variety of clients and stakeholders across the organisation monitoring legal developments to ensure the directorate is meeting the needs of its clients.

• To draft pleadings on behalf of the Chief Constable for submission at Court, representing the Chief Constable at Court hearings, Tribunals and within mediation and settlement meetings, undertaking own advocacy.

• Monitoring and evaluating the legal effect of legislative change, case law and trends, advising stakeholders on the practical implications as well developing and delivering training both internally and externally.

• Collaborating with the colleagues, taking a proactive approach when liaising with clients and stakeholders across the force area to establish and develop professional relationships.

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

• Experienced, qualified Solicitor, Barrister or FCILEx with rights of audience in England and Wales.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to demonstrate effective leadership.

• Advocacy experience in the Magistrates, County Courts, Tribunals or Misconduct proceedings.

• Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Civil Procedure Rules, the principles of obtaining civil preventative orders, employment Tribunal matters and general matters relating to policing.

• Ability to demonstrate subject matter expertise in at least one of the areas referenced and experience of managing complex and high value cases and conducting legal research.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
