London

When it comes to nation-changing purpose, landmark legislation and uniquely high profile cases, few organisations can match the Government Legal Department. From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on almost every aspect of UK life. Helping the government to govern well brings extraordinary work of rare depth and complexity – a career here means taking your experience to new heights on projects of incomparable scale, scope and reach.

About the team

Right now, we’re looking for a Litigation Lawyer to join our diverse and empowering Commercial Law Group (CLGp). CLGp provides a unified, expert commercial law service for government. Our remit spans everything from commercial contracts, public procurement and intellectual property through to construction, information law, competition, admiralty and judicial review.

About the role

Your role will involve providing legal advice on litigation, disputes, and contentious and advisory matters across our full range of clients – these include HM Treasury, the Ministry of Defence, the Cabinet Office, the Department of Health and Social Care, the Department for Transport and the Ministry of Justice. As well as supporting our Senior Lawyers and the Deputy Director of the Litigation team, you’ll proactively work with external delivery partners, always ensuring they deliver quality work on time and on budget.

About you

Experience of working in a commercial litigation environment is essential, as is solid commercial and contract law experience. We’ll want to see sound legal judgement, excellent analytical skills and a good appreciation of legal risk. A clear, honest and enthusiastic communicator, you can deliver sensitive information with clarity and empathy, and explain complex issues in an easily digestible way, being persuasive when you need to.

With an appreciation of the complexity and breadth of customer needs and expectations, you understand what makes for a high quality legal service, you can manage risk, and you always consider a broad range of methods and solutions. Just as importantly, you’ll need to be a strong team player who’ll enjoy being part of a truly inclusive environment in which people bring all sorts of perspectives and come from all sorts of backgrounds.

Why join us?

With excellent training, real work/life balance and a truly team-spirited environment, the opportunities here are huge. We’re talking about a future that could take you anywhere – from the environment to criminal law, healthcare to national security. And if that wasn’t enough, because we’re the Government Legal Department, you could have the opportunity to help make the law, not just interpret it.

Company

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall Departments.   From roads to rivers, and health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life.

The department has more than 14 client-facing advisory teams who provide legal advice on the development, design and implementation of government policies and decisions, draft secondary legislation and work with Parliamentary Counsel on primary legislation.  Our cross-cutting expert service groups for Litigation, Employment and Commercial Law provide specialist legal services to a wide range of government departments and public bodies.

We are a non-ministerial government department with more than 2,300 employees, around 1,800 of whom are solicitors or barristers. The department is based primarily in London but has teams in Bristol, Manchester, and Leeds.

As an organisation our vision is to be trusted by government to provide consistently excellent and value for money services so government departments want to come to us to meet their legal needs, to be known throughout the legal profession for the quality of our legal work, and to be the best employer for our people.
