Job Details

Looking for a new adventure and a professional challenge? We have the job for you!

 The Position

The Senior Magistrate acts as the sole professional member of the judiciary in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI), and British Antarctic Territory (BAT). Sitting in the Magistrate’s Court, as Acting Judge in the Supreme Court, Chairperson of Tribunals and as Coroner, the post holder will dispense justice fairly and impartially and thereby maintain public confidence in, and respect for, the ‘Rule of Law’ within the islands and territory.

The Senior Magistrate is the only resident judicial office holder in the Falkland Islands and exercises a jurisdiction comparable to that of a Crown Court/County Court Judge in England and Wales, and not – despite the constitutional title – that of a magistrate. The Chief Justice, (who is based in the UK) visits the Falkland Islands at regular intervals when the business of the Supreme Court so requires.

The Person

The successful candidate should have a minimum of 7 years’ recent relevant experience as a practicing professional advocate, (solicitor, barrister or equivalent) in the UK, a Commonwealth country or in a UK Overseas Territory, as well as a minimum of 3 years’ full time, (or 5 years’ part-time) judicial experience working on matters involving criminal trials, family law and coroners’ inquests.

The successful candidate will also be an excellent communicator who possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to instil and maintain credibility across the board including with key contacts and the wider public at large. Excellent analytical, reasoning and decision making skills are also essential for this role.

 The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract of up to 4 years.
  • Salary Range - £75,976 - £93,769 per annum. Starting salary will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
  • 25% pension equivalency payment, (which can be paid annually or on final completion of contract)
  • 41 days paid annual leave, (inclusive of government and public holidays).
  • Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs.
  • Flights Package for you and any recognised dependants accompanying you to post
  • Government Housing for rent and a starter pack to help you settle in.

Please note, successful applicants with Falkland Islands Status/PRP will be employed on local terms and conditions.
