About the role:

If you're an adaptable and highly organised Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives with experience of planning law and practice, you could play a key role at Horsham District Council.

We are looking for creative and proactive Lawyer / Senior Lawyer and/or Principal Lawyer (Planning) depending on experience, to join the dynamic Legal Services Department.

You will manage your own caseload giving legal advice to the Council and its officers and this will include the drafting and negotiation of complex s106 agreements, nomination agreements and enforcement notices. You will also be required to draft, prepare and comment on committee reports, policy documents and other briefing papers and to attend Planning Committees for the Head of Service. Clear advice should be given to Members and client departments on the impact of legislation and codes of practice and local policies.

You should have a systematic approach to your work and the proven ability to prioritise and meet deadlines. Furthermore, you will be a confident IT user and be an excellent team player who can effectively deal with a range of people using clear, concise, modern and authoritative communication skills.

For the Principal role you will lead a small team and manage and supervise staff and you will be expected to provide cover and assistance to the Head of Legal and Democratic Services. You will be required to contribute to the delivery of Corporate objectives and to the collective leadership and strategic goals and management of Legal Services and the Organisation.

Horsham District Council encourages and supports their employees to have a healthy work life balance by supporting their professional development as well as offering 27 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays (pro-rata), a generous benefits package and an online platform offering discounts from online retailers. Staff are eligible to join a contributory pension scheme where the Council contributes 20% of pensionable salary. The Council also provides reimbursement for professional subscriptions and access to a car lease scheme.

For an informal discussion about this role please call Sharon Evans, Head of Legal and Democratic Services on 01403 215538
