Help us regulate the UK’s financial services.

Who we are

With a remit that incorporates everything from human rights and health to transport and the environment, the Government Legal Department (GLD) offers an exceptional career opportunity. Comprised of 1,800 Lawyers and a further 500 support colleagues, we are the largest provider of legal services across the government, and we work with all of the main departments within Whitehall. As such, our people have access to the most exceptional challenges in a dynamic and forward-thinking environment, benefitting from the expertise of multidisciplinary colleagues who collaborate to achieve exceptional results. Furthermore, we support our employees with a good work-life balance and the scope for flexible working. As a member of this team, you will be encouraged to tackle high-profile challenges that will further your knowledge and capabilities – and in the process, you will put your career on a fascinating path.

The role

We are now looking for grade 7 Financial Services Lawyers to join our Treasury Legal Advisors Division. This team handles all aspects of the regulation of financial services, with a reach that extends from banks, insurance companies and asset management, through to public and private markets, market infrastructure and consumer protection. Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, it is vital that we are capable of advising policy makers and Ministers on changes that need to be made to the UK’s regulatory regime, and as such, there is a great opportunity to support the shaping of policies, plus the development of primary and secondary legislation.

Under the guidance of a more senior Lawyer, you will embark on a steep learning curve as you extend your financial services knowledge (or if you are new to this field, you will quickly learn from our excellent CPD-accredited in-house training programme). While your duties will vary depending on which of our three teams you join, you can expect to work with Lawyers from other Government Departments, the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority to negotiate and implement international agreements and other legal measures. You will also take on challenges such as drafting legislation, and you will advise on judicial review and litigious issues.

About You

This is an exciting opportunity to acquire specialised knowledge of the financial services market. We would therefore be delighted to receive your application if you have some experience or a genuine interest in the sector. As a highly astute individual with great intellectual and analytical skills, you will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, or you will be due to qualify within three months. With a good knowledge of public law and the willingness to acquire commercial legal expertise, you will have sound legal judgement, a good awareness of risk and the capacity to see issues in the wider context. You will also be a team-player with well-developed communication skills, and you will be committed to helping us deliver a high-quality legal service.
