Council Membership Committee

The Law Society (“the Society”) represents solicitors in England & Wales and has over 160,000 members across the world. The Society’s role is to represent, promote and support solicitors in England and Wales, and internationally.

The Society is governed by its Council which sets the strategic direction of the Society’s work. Under the Society’s governance structure there is a Council Membership Committee  charged with overseeing the representational base of Council and recommending reform. It has a programme to implement continuing reform of Council to enhance engagement with the profession. It is an excellent position from which to understand the working of Council for those contemplating future appointment to Council.

Applications are now sought for up to nine non-Council member positions.  Applicants must be solicitors. The Society is particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals practising in one or more of the following work or geographical areas:

• In-house corporate
• Litigation
• Private client and/or family law
• Conveyancing
• Crime
• London area
• The South of England
• The Midlands
• Wales

To ensure diversity of protected characteristics we particularly welcome applicants from ethnic minority lawyers, disabled lawyers, LGBT+ lawyers and those in the earlier stages of their career.

The ideal candidates will show a strong commitment to the values of the Society, the interests of its members and the public and to ensuring equality, diversity, and inclusion in all the activities of the Society.

The roles are unremunerated although reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Committee members will serve a term of three years, renewable for up to two further terms.

Interviews will take place at 113 Chancery Lane on Tuesday 7 September. between the hours of 9 to 5. You will be given a one-hour time slot via email if chosen for interview. If you cannot attend an interview on this date, we cannot guarantee an alternative date will be available.
