Do you have what it takes to join the UK’s leading in-house police legal team?

The Metropolitan Police Service is proud of the role it plays in policing London, a diverse and vibrant capital city with a growing population. The Met is anchored in the communities it serves but with national and international reach.

The Team

Working in a growing team of close to 150 staff, including around 80 in-house legal professionals and with the support of administrative colleagues, you will provide high quality legal services to more than 40,000 officers and staff. The Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) has been acting for the Commissioner on legal matters since 1935 in an advisory capacity and through representation at courts, tribunals and several high profile public inquiries. The team ensures the cost effective provision of all legal services to the Met, the largest police service in the UK and one of the most trusted in the world. We need top lawyers to help us achieve our aims.

The Role

DLS advises on a range of challenging and sensitive matters including high profile investigations, civil litigation (including malfeasance and personal injury), employment law, public law challenges, regulatory law, inquests and inquires, discrimination, information law, commercial and procurement law, family law and operational policing matters including advice on counter-terrorism. In this key role, you’ll need to analyse information critically, provide effective written and oral advice, organise a complex workload and work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues and other stakeholders in a publicly accountable environment. It’s more important that you have the aptitude, ambition and potential to thrive in this environment rather than any particular previous experience of policing.

The Candidate

We are looking for able lawyers with a “can-do” attitude who enjoy a fast paced environment and are unfazed by pressure. Being highly organised, working with minimum supervision and the ability to meet tight deadlines are crucial for this role.

Whilst being able to carry a varied and heavy caseload it is essential that you are:

  • A qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer in England and Wales who has completed a training contract, pupillage (or has been exempted from this by the Law Society or Bar Council) or has qualified through the CILEx route.
  • Able to critically analyse information, provide effective written and oral advice, organise a complex workload and work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues and other stakeholders in a publicly accountable environment
  • Able to demonstrate excellent oral and written skills, as well as the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Sound judgement and analytical skills are critical, as is the ability to work in a team environment

We have a particular need for lawyers with knowledge of employment law and would welcome applications from suitably experienced candidates, while we do encourage all lawyers to develop their skills and make use of the opportunities to move between different types of legal work during their career with us.

In return you can expect a rewarding career in the country’s biggest in-house police team.

This permanent post is offered on a full-time basis however we are committed to creating an inclusive working environment so welcome and encourage applications from candidates who have a flexible working pattern, provided they meet the business needs of DLS in line with the Met’s Smarter Working policies.

Whilst our roles can be demanding and require work which needs to be delivered quickly, sometimes at short notice, we will work to ensure that people are able to achieve the right balance.

DLS’ main offices are based in Holborn however staff will regularly travel to other locations. DLS are moving to a pattern of blended working, subject to operational requirements.

Completed applications must be submitted by 23.55pm on 20th August 2021.

Interview dates scheduled for 8th and 9th September 2011.

We view diversity as fundamental to our success. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, we need a workforce made up from all of London’s communities. Applications from across the community are therefore essential.

As a Disability Confident Committed Employer the Met have committed to ensuring that disabled people and those with long-term health conditions have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.
