Service Manager – Legal Services

£47,854 - £49,866 per annum

Ashfield District Council is perfectly placed in the East Midlands with great connectivity, strong services, excellent prospects for growth, and lots of ambition. This is an exciting time for Ashfield. Some of our key priorities include: the development of our local plan, digital transformation and the delivery of our transformational regeneration programmes including a new leisure centre, the Future High Streets Fund and Towns Fund programmes, and new social housing delivery.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Service Manager to manage the Legal Team. You will be responsible for providing an efficient and effective legal service across all areas of legal work. You will act as Deputy Monitoring Officer.

You will initially manage the Shared Legal Team for Ashfield and Mansfield District Councils until the arrangement comes to an end in 2022. You will be instrumental in developing and then managing the new in-house legal provision for Ashfield District Council playing a key role in leading the team through the transition period. Your role will see you providing legal support across the Council in order to deliver the Council’s priorities including the ambitious Future High Streets Fund and Towns Fund programme (over £70 million of investment in the District).

You will be a Solicitor of the Supreme Court and have significant experience in contentious and non-contentious legal work. You should also have significant experience in Local Government or other sector management, including the supervision, development and management of people and resources. Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be capable of working under pressure and demonstrate a commitment to flexibility.  A high standard of IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential.

Responsibilities also include: Carrying out complex project and legal work involving conducting local investigations, contracts, complex agreements, litigation including advocacy at a complex level and constitutional advice; attending Council, committee and working group meetings to provide legal and procedural advice; ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Data Protection legislation and the Regulation of Investigatory Power Act 2000.
