Risk & Compliance Manager

Well-established North Yorkshire law firm are seeking to appoint an experienced Risk and Compliance Manager to be based in their York office.

This would suit someone seeking part time hours.

Reporting to the MD, the role will involve supporting the Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) by taking responsibility for the firm’s risk management function, to include helping ensure the firm’s regulatory compliance and maintenance of the Lexcel accreditation.

You will support the promotion and development of a proactive firm-wide culture of effective risk management and an ongoing risk management strategy in accordance with the firm’s business plan.

Responsibilities will include:

• Agreeing and implementing risk management strategy,

• Advising internally on the professional conduct and ethical obligations of lawyers,
• Advising internally on managing risk and on compliance,
• Assisting compliance post holders with the day to day elements of their role, such as data breach handling, data subject access requests, SAR handling, maintenance of the firm’s AML PCPs,
• Providing regular updates to Compliance post holders and Directors which will include emerging risk issues or developments, reviews of working practices and agreeing mitigation actions,
• Working with IT and other management staff (Finance, Marketing and HR) to mitigate operational risks,
• Designing, delivering and sourcing effective communications and risk training programmes and materials,

• Creating, updating and maintaining the firm’s Compliance Manual and Risk Blog on the firm’s intranet,
• Developing and communicating concise, user-friendly risk management procedures, policies and precedents,

• Overseeing and analysing the firm’s risk data; reporting on data trends,
• Maintaining and overseeing the firm’s breach reporting and complaints handling.

You will need:

• Ideally to be a qualified Solicitor or have some experience of working in a law firm with some prior senior-level experience of professional services risk management or similar,
• Experience in delivering training,             
• Experience of anti-money laundering and counter terrorist funding,
• Experience of preparing firm for Lexcel accreditation,
• Track record of leading the development and delivery of cutting-edge risk management solutions,
• Experience of SRA investigation,
• Experience of complaint handling,
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), with a dedication to client care,     
• To be proactive and decisive.

• To have drive, enthusiasm, self-confidence and a good sense of humour.
