CRIMINAL DEFENCE SOLICITOR – MOTORING LAW

Job Specification - What responsibilities will you have?

The successful candidate will be working within a small Legal Team and you will have the responsibility of handling your own technically complex caseload defending motor offences. You will be responsible for client care, strategy decisions – all aspects of handling a file. Here’s more detail about what your job will include.

We are often instructed with very little time before the first hearing, on challenging cases across a range of motor offences and you may have a number of cases in Court at the same time.

In dealing with this caseload you will be:
1. Advising clients on all aspects including technical issues, costs and penalties;
2. Drafting letters (both standard and non-standard) and documents, which require no amendments in respect of grammar, spelling or formatting;
3. Taking detailed proofs and mitigation statements from your client and any relevant witnesses (potentially out of office hours over the telephone);
4. Reviewing evidence and appropriately advising the client;
5. Instructing the right experts to assist your client’s case;
6. Instructing and confidently liaising with Counsel, both at preliminary hearings and on the day of trial;
7. Making strategic decisions on your cases, with the input of management or counsel where needed;
8. Advising your client (both in writing and verbally) of the Court process and what they should expect at Court (both for preliminary hearings and trial);
9. Discussing the outcome of the hearing with your client and providing any further advice that may be needed after trial;
10. Providing written result information to your client, with proper advice on any appeal;
11. Using a case management system (Proclaim) to detail in file notes any actions you take, calls made or received, or papers drafted;
12. Properly time recording all work carried out on any file;
13. Completing file reviews as required;
14. Taking and converting new enquiry calls and being able to properly advise on sentence, strategy and prices; and
15. Taking part in the out of hours rota for new enquiry calls (on a shared basis with other team members, currently between 5pm and 8pm weeknights and 10am to 7pm weekends).

Person Specification - Are you the person we are looking for?

Solid experience in motoring law is a must with confidence to run a full caseload of up to 30 files of defending motoring offences. You must have strong IT skills and experience of using Proclaim (case management system).

You will be a considerate team player, technically minded, fearless and professional, innovative, a real people person with the intellectual desire and skill to analyse and apply the law to deliver solutions. You will probably have already been told by your colleagues that you are commercially aware with an abundance of common sense and highly empathetic approach to client care that makes you stand out from the crowd.

We have listed below further skills and traits that are equally as important to us and the role. However, it is also important that this list resonates with you too. Otherwise, we may not be the firm for you.

Essential Requirements
• Qualified Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive of up to 2 years’ PQE;
• Law Degree (2:2 or higher), CiLEX or equivalent;
• Solid experience of motoring law and defending motoring offences in a client facing role with experience of running your own caseload, both guilty and not guilty pleas;
• Sound knowledge of the Criminal Court system and process;
• At least 1 year’s experience using Proclaim (case management system); and
• Strong IT skills including Outlook, Word and Excel.

If you do not have the above, we will not be able to consider your application.

Desirable Requirements
• Experience of successfully converting new enquiry calls to become full clients.

Personality
• A calm and positive mind-set/approach;
• Efficient, organised and able to work quickly whilst under pressure and juggling multiple deadlines / priorities;
• Have a professional attitude and ability to be empathetic, approachable and non-judgemental of our clients and the allegations they face often including drink driving and drug driving;
• Confident communicator, both over the telephone and in writing (with excellent grammar, spelling and attention to detail);
• Be Enthusiastic, Resilient and have a can-do attitude and helpful to all team members;
• Have an inquisitive mind, use your own initiative to find answers or solve problems and enjoy considering strategy and research (we like to think outside the box!); and
• Willing to listen, learn, embrace training and improvement of your knowledge in this niche area.

Company

About the firm

We are the UK’s most prestigious firm of specialist driving offence solicitors, defending drivers nationwide for all UK criminal motoring offences, keeping drivers on the road!

Our business is thriving, (40% ahead of our financial targets!) and we are looking to expand our talented legal team. Our office environment and position in the legal market offer the perfect opportunity for candidates who love working in crime but without the negatives of losing sleep due to unsociable hours, poor work/life balance and money in the process.

Geoffrey Miller Solicitors are very different from most law firms and are proud of that.

Our clients are from all walks of life as our business is not built on celebrity endorsements but on delivering excellence, expertise and genuine care for our clients with the highest level of integrity and compliance.

We are not a legal aid firm and only deal with private paying clients.

All staff work traditional business hours, so no police station call outs at 3 am!

Everyone who works for us is properly valued not just in monetary terms but with recognition, progression opportunities and with higher than average pay (compared to general criminal law), bonuses and much more.

Our values are at the core of what we do and how we work and interact:

Having everyone within the business work with these values in mind means we are all singing from a unified “hymn sheet” and we are able to deliver a high level of service to our clients working harmoniously with our colleagues, opponents and courts.

Our Core Values 1. Positivity

We believe in the positive results achieved through positive thinking and the importance of all communication both internally and externally being approached with a positive mind-set.

Mindset is such an important concept with respected business and world leaders and well known inspirational figures often speaking of the importance and power of our beliefs. We have positive quotes strewn around our offices and regular team training and discussions about the importance of positive thinking.

2. Team Work

We are a team and we act with integrity, respect and consideration. We value open communication as the best way to create amazing relationships.

Respect and consideration for one another, our clients and our professional associates is also paramount. This starts at home but we are firm believers in treating others as we hope to be treated. This makes our firm a harmonious place to work, our clients feel valued and cared for and our professional colleagues enjoy working with us.

3. Client is King

We care deeply about our clients. We have a genuine desire to help and make a difference to our clients. We follow the principle that the “Client is King”.

Anyone who joins our team must have the desire to go the extra mile for our clients. To do whatever we can to make their experience less stressful and challenging. This is why we think we have such positive reviews of our services on sites like Trustpilot.

4. Work Ethic

We are driven by performance and inspired by change. Our objectives are challenging, and we recognise and celebrate both individual and team successes.

Motoring law is full of twists and turns and we have to be proactive and reactive to change all of the time.

5. Accountability

We are accountable and we each take personal responsibility for the needs of our clients and the success of our business.

We have a pretty clear policy within the business. We are responsible for doing what we say we will do, whether this involves returning a client’s call or providing work to a colleague by an expected deadline. Although we all work to a high standard, we recognise mistakes can happen as we are only human. However, if we make a mistake, we own it and do what we can to put things right. We also implement measures to ensure mistakes cannot recur. I think of it this way: Making a mistake once is understandable and forgivable. Making the same mistake more than once is a choice.

6. Excellence

We practice excellence. We continually look for ways to improve performance and take pride in the quality of everything we do.

We invest heavily in staff training, computer software, strategy innovation and wherever we can improve what and how we do our work. Self-reflection including 360 feedback sought from staff about management have revealed some of the best ideas from members of our team.

7. Expert Pioneers

We are proud to be pioneers of our field of expertise in motoring law and serious litigation. In addition to being at the forefront of this niche area of law, we are creative and devise new ideas and unique case strategies to stay at the leading edge.

We are at the forefront of the motoring law market and our position at the leading edge places us in a uniquely advantageous position to achieve results that no other firm is equipped to do.
