Job Details

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (the SDT) is an independent statutory tribunal.  It protects the interests of the public and maintains confidence in the reputation of the solicitors’ profession by adjudicating on cases of alleged disciplinary breaches by solicitors, registered European lawyers, registered foreign lawyers and employees of solicitors’ firms.

It also deals with applications from former solicitors applying to be restored to the Roll after being struck off, or from solicitors applying to end a suspension or to vary practising restrictions.

The SDT is now looking for up to 15 Solicitor Members and up to 10 Lay Members to join this prestigious and high profile tribunal.  Solicitor Members are practising solicitors of at least 10 years’ standing and Lay Members are people who are not solicitors or barristers.

As a member of the SDT you will bring your experience, knowledge and judgement to a range of complex and challenging cases. Working as a panel of three, you will hear and discuss the evidence, and then come to a joint decision.

You will need to commit at least 15 days each year, including time to read papers in preparation, draft Judgments and stay abreast of developments in the arena.

In return, you will enjoy an intellectually stimulating and rewarding role, working with Members from a wide variety of professional backgrounds.

If you are independent, impartial and transparent, and want to play an essential role in upholding standards and maintaining public confidence in the solicitors’ profession whilst ensuring fairness and justice, please visit www.solicitorstribunal.org.uk to find out more and apply.

Members are paid £595 plus expenses for each sitting day and are appointed for an initial 5 year term with the possibility of subsequent reappointment.

Closing date: 14 November 2021

The Master of the Rolls and the SDT are committed to promoting diversity and equality of opportunity in the tribunal’s membership. Everyone who applies for appointment will be treated fairly and with respect. The appointment process will be carried out through fair, transparent and merit-based recruitment procedures and no-one will be treated less favourably because of their race (including nationality, ethnic or national origins), sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital or civil partnership status, age, disability, pregnancy or maternity, paternity or adoption.
