Legally Qualified Chair and Legal Assessor

Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, Manchester and home based

Turn your legal expertise to some of the most important questions in UK medicine.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) is the tribunal service for doctors in the UK. Our tribunals make independent decisions about whether doctors are fit to practise medicine. We are a statutory committee of the General Medical Council (GMC) operating separately from the investigatory role of the GMC and we are accountable to the Council of the GMC and the UK Parliament.

As a legally qualified individual, you will join us in fulfilling two important roles; predominantly as a Legally Qualified Chair (LQC), whilst also being required to undertake the work of a Legal Assessor where this is required.

You will demonstrate integrity, leadership and strong analytical skills, while reaching impartial and unbiased decisions affecting the lives of doctors. You will be required to advise tribunal members on points of law and chair proceedings; the complexity and variety of hearings has enabled many LQCs to establish or develop their judicial careers.

Hearings are mainly carried out at our hearing centre in Manchester but we also run virtual hearings where tribunals work from home. A daily fee of £500 is payable, plus reasonable expenses when attending the hearing centre.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, in particular those with protected characteristics as it is important that our tribunal is representative of the UK public that we seek to protect. We recognise the value that lived experience brings, alongside skills and knowledge, and actively encourage those with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply to work with us. We are committed to our processes and procedures being fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination.

To meet our hearing volume requirements, we would ask that applications are only made where you can provide availability to sit for at least 35 days each year.

To discover more and apply, visit our appointments page on our website. Closing date for receipt of applications: Midnight on 8 November 2021
