Who we are

Located in Northern Devon, we're the Local Authority for the area of Torridge. We look after our residents and visitors providing a wide range of services. All this in an area of 984 square km with a population of 67,000, it's no easy task but our team of around 270 employees are integral to supporting our local area and working hard to provide the best positive service for our customers.

Responsibilities of Post

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Solicitor or Legal Executive to lead the Council’s Legal, Land Charges, Democratic Service and Elections Teams. You’ll form part of the Council’s Operational Management Team and therefore contribute to the delivery of the Council’s Strategic Plan through the provision of specialist legal advice, a solution orientated and customer focused approach.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective delivery of a range of legal services, providing legal advice to Officers, Members and other relevant bodies, attending and presenting reports at Committees and the development of realistic business plans against a backdrop of continuing financial pressures and rising expectations.

The postholder will also act as the Authorities’ FOI Officer, Deputy Data Protection Officer, authorised officer for RIPA and deputise for the Head of Legal and Governance, as required.

Requirements of Post

The successful candidate will be a qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive, able to demonstrate sound knowledge of relevant legal practice and procedures and an understanding of change management and effective leadership.  Extensive experience in management of at least one area of responsibility is essential, along with an appreciation of the issues and challenges facing the others.

Benefits of Working for Us

Our office is located on the banks of the Torridge estuary in Bideford, one of the most breath-taking parts of the South West within walking distance of the dramatic North Devon Coastline.

If you are looking for a new professional challenge then contact Staci Dorey, Head of Legal and Governance on 01237 428763 for a confidential and informal discussion about how this opportunity might be right for you.

In return we offer a friendly and supportive working environment that offers flexible working, local government holiday and pension provision.
