Senior Casework Officer
High Holborn, London (with regular home working)
circa £40,000 pa (depending on skills and experience) (Plus a benefit allowance of £1,300 per annum)
35 hours per week - Full-time, permanent contract.

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers and their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and handling complaints. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system so BSB’s mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law. It is an exciting time at the organisation as we embark on a new strategy to continue to regulate in the public interest, support those we regulate to face the future, and ensure there is a strong and sustainable regulator for the Bar.

We are looking to appoint a full-time qualified barrister, solicitor (or equivalent) within the Investigations and Enforcement team. The post holder will hold their own caseload including complex of cases and will be responsible for investigating barristers conduct, drafting charges and reports, gathering evidence and deciding on the content of bundles, corresponding with barristers, witnesses and anyone involved in the regulatory process. They will also be required to attend hearings and support counsel at tribunals and appeals before the High Court.

Experience of legal procedures or litigation and substantial experience of casework is essential, as is the ability to work effectively as part of a team, sharing knowledge and supporting other members of staff.  Knowledge of regulatory procedures and/or experience of working for a regulator is desirable but not essential.

In return the Bar Council offers excellent terms and conditions of employment, including:

  • Up to 31 days annual leave
  • Up to 12% employer’s pension contribution
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity pay
  • Life cover, and more
  • Flexible working – 1-3 days a week working from home

All candidates are required to apply online with a CV and Cover letter. Candidates are strongly advised to address the essential criteria as specified in the person specification.

Candidates with a disability who require reasonable adjustments should contact Vivien Bock on 0207 611 4699. The Bar Standards Board operates the ‘two ticks’ scheme.  Candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria for this role will be guaranteed an interview under this scheme.

Closing Date:   29th November 2021 at 9am

Proposed Interview Date: 10th December 2021
Please note, we reserve the right to close this advert early depending on application numbers. Therefore we would encourage all candidates to submit an application as soon as possible.

We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all job applicants irrespective of race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, maternity or pregnancy, marital or civil partnership status or gender re-assignment.
