LOCUM ASSISTANT PUBLIC SOLICITOR
- CRIME

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 months FTC starting January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The legal systems are based on modified English law.

The island’s team of Law Officers is currently made up of the Attorney General, a Solicitor General, Crown Counsel (Child care and Safeguarding) Crown Counsel (Criminal) and Crown Counsel (Commercial), two trainees and a legal executive along with a Legal Officer and a full-time Legislative Draftsperson working remotely from Florida.

In this vital role, you will support the Public Solicitor Office with advisory and litigation support in relation to all aspects of criminal litigation including Magistrate Court appearances, Supreme Court trials, and, where necessary, in the Court of Appeal. Available on call, you will represent clients in all criminal matters including at the police station and prison. The majority of the criminal work involves sexual offences of all levels of seriousness and litigation relating to ancillary orders such as Sexual Offender Prevention Orders.

You are a UK solicitor or barrister with substantial criminal litigation experience - ideally Crown Court trial and appellate - and including advocacy in the Crown Court. You have a background in defending at the police station including out of hours on-call. Holding a Higher Courts Advocacy qualification you have Appellate experience and have dealt with complex and novel issues of law.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • Salary: £48k pa, pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications
  • An International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at https://sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/
  • Relocation Allowances, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at https://sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/
  • Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5% of salary
  • Leave of 5 days plus Public Holidays
