Sometimes something goes so wrong in a criminal case that it leads to a miscarriage of justice. There might not have been a crime at all, the wrong person might have been convicted, the process might have failed, or important new information might become available, meaning that the conviction is unsafe or the sentence is wrong.

The CCRC is the independent public body that investigates suspected miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and in the Court Martial and Service Civilian Court.

Our main role is to investigate cases where people believe they have been wrongly convicted of a criminal offence or wrongly sentenced. We have the statutory power to obtain documents or other material held by public and private bodies and to take any steps necessary to fulfil our function, such as interviewing witnesses or instructing experts.

About the role
Group Leaders manage, direct, and support a team of professionals dedicated to finding and investigating miscarriages of justice. Your team members will each be responsible for a challenging portfolio of cases, which vary in size and complexity, but often concern the most serious convictions such as murder and serious sexual offences.

You will need to guide and challenge your group to ensure that each case review is appropriately thorough, focussed and well planned, that work is ongoing in each case, and that no review takes longer than reasonably necessary to reach a conclusion. You will advise on complex cases and set the tone for our interactions with applicants and other stakeholders. Each Group Leader is accountable to the Casework Operations Director for the performance of their group, setting and maintaining the high standards which group members are expected to meet.

About you
We are looking for an emotionally-intelligent leader who can foster effective working relationships at all levels both inside and outside the CCRC. You will need to be able to lead and motivate your team in a remote working environment. You must be able to analyse complex information and identify the critical elements within it, exercise impartial judgment and make sound decisions. It is important that you are articulate and persuasive, able to listen and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. You will need a positive problem-solving attitude, a willingness to take decisions, the ability to balance competing priorities and the drive to get the job done.

Please note that this role requires clearance to CTC (Counter Terrorist Check) level.
