In House Legal & Compliance Counsel - Trading & Shipping

They make the basic raw materials for industry sectors such as automotive, building and construction, healthcare and medical, water treatment and many more.

The Trading & Shipping arm of the Group undertakes worldwide physical trading and shipping and financial trading of wholesale and downstream refined oil products, petrochemical products, feedstocks, energy and CO2 products, with the current focus on Europe, North America and Asia.

The Role:

They seek an experienced lawyer 5+ PQE to join as their Legal and Compliance Counsel - this role is to be based at their HQ in London.

The company requires a Senior Legal & Compliance Counsel to assist the Head of Risk & Legal to play a key role in delivering legal and compliance services and support to the business. You will also be working on a day-to-day basis for managers across the full spectrum of the business.

You'll work in different legal and regulatory environments with constant legislative changes. Also, work will surround different strategies and projects related to the business' competitiveness and challenges.

Purpose/Responsibilities:

• Provide legal and compliance-related support for the feedstocks, petrochemicals, energy and CO2 desks.
• Manage the negotiation of physical and financial master trading agreements (such as EFETs, ISDAs and IETAs) and more bespoke structured trading agreements and supporting documents such as charterparties, licence agreements and storage agreements.
• Responsible for advising on and managing compliance aspects of the Business and keeping up to date with relevant changes in the compliance landscape.
• Provide broader legal advice to the Business relating to corporate, commercial and regulatory matters and disputes.
• Share legal knowledge by producing know-how that non-lawyers can readily understand
• Assist other Group businesses and projects with specialist knowledge and expertise as relevant.
• Work with Head of Risk and Legal or directly with the Business on all of the above.

Education & General Experience Required:

• Law degree and excellent legal training; 5+ years PQE from a prominent law firm or in-house team
• Broad legal/commercial experience
• Previous in-house experience preferable (not required)
• Previous experience of physical and financial trading contracts and/or shipping would be beneficial.
• Some experience of one or more of the following: MIFID II, REMIT, EMIR, FinfraG, Dodd Frank and MAD/MAR, sanctions, KYC/Counterparty Due Diligence.

Technical Skills Required:

• Broad legal knowledge (corporate law, commercial & contract law, private & public law)
• Exceptional drafting and negotiation skills
• Native or excellent written and spoken English.
