The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers and their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and handling potential breaches of the BSB Handbook. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system so the BSB’s mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law.

An exciting opportunity for a dynamic and proactive Senior Legal Support Lawyer has arisen in the Legal Support Team, which provides high quality legal support across all the BSB’s regulatory decision-making functions. The successful candidate will have a huge amount of scope to make a significant contribution to the work of the BSB as well as the development of the Legal Support Team.

Reporting directly to the Head of Legal Support, the Senior Legal Support Lawyer’s duties will include:  assisting with handling litigation and the provision of legal advice; providing advice and support in the development of operational policies and procedures including BSB Handbook changes; arranging the BSB’s legal training programme and where necessary providing such training; maintaining and developing legal knowledge management systems; contributing to the operation and development of the continuous improvement system; working with other Departments to develop and deliver organisation wide strategies and projects; supervising and assisting with the development of other members of the Legal Support Team and the team’s profile within the BSB; and deputising for the Head of Legal Support as appropriate.

The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor or barrister eligible to hold a practising certificate in England & Wales (barristers will also need to have a litigation extension to their practising certificate).

Substantial experience of handling litigation, providing written and oral legal advice and providing legal services in the regulatory/public sector is essential, as is experience of regulatory/disciplinary proceedings, judicial review, knowledge of public and administrative law, and civil procedure and the law of evidence. The ability to analyse and succinctly disseminate complex legal information for the purpose of providing robust advice is also fundamental to this role. They will have excellent written, analytical, communication and organisational skills.

Experience working within a risk-based regulatory regime, drafting policy and precedent documents and implementing information sharing systems is desirable, as is having an understanding of regulatory enforcement systems and regulatory law. Demonstrable experience of advising on commercial contracts and other agreements (e.g. Memoranda of Understanding) is also desirable, as is experience of the Data Protection Act 2018/UK GDPR.

In return the Bar Standards Board offers excellent terms and conditions of employment, including:

  • Up to 31 days annual leave
