Devon County Council are looking for a lawyer of at least 4 years PQE, with litigation and employment law experience to join the Legal team.

This is a chance to enjoy a truly varied range of cases for an organisation whose focus is to work with and for the local community. It is often said but any two days are rarely the same.

In this unique role you will manage a varied criminal litigation caseload including Trading Standards, education, highways and planning enforcement prosecutions, as well as civil litigation cases covering such areas as SEN, education, highways and debt recovery. In addition, you will have the opportunity to provide advice on a range of Employment Law matters including disciplinary cases and addressing grievances, whistleblowing and Equality Act implications in staffing issues, TUPE and policy development as well as defending the Council in Employment Tribunal claims.

We are looking for somebody who has experience of criminal litigation, as well as a good working knowledge of some of the other abovementioned areas of law. You must be willing to learn new areas of law to be able to provide fast paced legal advice on a range of legal topics. You will also have the opportunity to conduct your own advocacy as required by your cases.  Previous Local Government experience is desirable but not essential, however you must demonstrate that you have a keen interest in working in the public sector.

When completing the “Supporting Statement” section of the Application, please ensure that you have addressed the above-mentioned responsibilities.

What’s in it for you?

Aside from the fulfilling day-to-day job, you’ll benefit from our pension scheme and Employee Assistance Programme. You’ll be living and working one of the most beautiful parts of country with the option to work from home when suitable. There are development opportunities in this role and potential to increase your annual leave based on years of service.

Company

Roles available range from legal assistant to senior solicitor. There are also opportunities for paralegal apprenticeships which provide a career progression route for legally unqualified staff.

Working in a public sector legal environment offers many advantages over private practice. There are no billing targets and a flexible working policy enables some flexibility in working hours, along with the possibility of some homeworking – ensuring that staff are able to maintain a positive work-life balance.

The variety of work is also much broader in a local authority. No two days are the same and you will be asked to consider questions and issues that you would be unlikely to come across in private practice.
