Commercial lawyers could expect to; advise on high value and complex public procurement and contractual commercial legal issues within government, supporting to HMRC's largest transformation programmes including IT and Estates and our day to day banking and general commercial operations.

Criminal lawyers could expect to advise and support investigators to take forward HMRC's tax enforcement activity in investigating serious complex fraud and other criminal noncompliance. Litigation Lawyers could expect to; litigate cases ranging from big money tax cases and resisting judicial review challenges to litigating civil cases against those who benefit from the proceeds of crime; consider novel and challenging points of law and contribute to developing the interpretation of the law, regularly litigating through the higher courts to the Supreme Court.

Company

Departments (in particular the Government Legal Department) fill vacancies when there are gaps in their legal capacity that cannot be filled from the existing population.

Qualified lawyer posts are open to barristers, solicitors and chartered legal executives who meet the professional qualifications criteria.

There are around 2,300 lawyers providing civil advisory and litigation services to central government departments.

Departments have clear policies surrounding the amount of time they expect their lawyers to remain in a particular post. This is usually between 3 and 4 years. After this time, lawyers considering a move are advised to work with their legal managers and consider what their next post might be.
