Make a difference at the heart of Government

Are you a qualified lawyer, looking for innovative, stimulating and rewarding work? Do you have good legal skills and reliable legal judgement with the ability to think strategically and creatively and see legal issues in their wider context? If so, we’d like you to join our legal teams in London Stratford, Leeds, Manchester, or Bristol.

HMRC is the UK’s tax payments and customs authority. We have a vital purpose: we collect the money that pays for our public services and help families and individuals with targeted financial support. HMRC Solicitor’s Office and Legal Service (SOLS) gives legal advice on issues arising from HMRC’s work and conducts HMRC’s litigation.

What will I be doing?

You will have a unique opportunity to make the law - through advice and legislation - and to contribute to the development of the interpretation of the law - through the major cases we litigate. You may be providing advice, working on legislation, and drafting statutory instruments. You may also be providing commercial or criminal law advice or conducting litigation across a range of HMRC work. Advisory lawyers could expect to: advise HMRC colleagues and Treasury ministers on the interpretation and application of tax legislation, work on primary legislation, support policy colleagues through the parliamentary process and draft statutory instruments. Commercial lawyers could expect to; advise on high value and complex public procurement and contractual commercial legal issues. Criminal lawyers could expect to advise and support investigators to take forward HMRC's tax enforcement activity in investigating criminal noncompliance. Litigation Lawyers could expect to; litigate cases ranging from big money tax cases and resisting judicial review challenges to litigating civil cases against those who benefit from the proceeds of crime; regularly litigating through the higher courts to the Supreme Court.

About us

You’ll join a supportive, friendly and helpful community, we believe that we are a great place to work, and we want your experience of working with us to be outstanding.  We are a diverse and inclusive employer, supporting social mobility and giving opportunities to people. You will have a supportive, encouraging environment with great learning and career development opportunities. We are creating a genuinely diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels able to bring their best.

Who are we looking for?

You’ll be, able to provide legally sound risk based advise; able to explain complex issues in writing and orally, in a way that is easy to understand; be analytical with good research skills; resilient and able to work under pressure; available and approachable and receptive to new ideas; able to cope with new process and change; self-aware and keen to use feedback to help you learn and develop as a professional.

We have vacancies in all our lawyer roles. We would like to hear from you whatever stage you are at in your legal career. We welcome applications from lawyers who have existing knowledge of our work or tax experience, whatever your experience we will give you training and support to develop your knowledge and expertise.
