The Pensions Ombudsman has an opportunity for a Lead Lawyer to join our team based in Canary Wharf (with up to 80% homeworking after induction). You will be working on a full or part time basis, on a permanent contract and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of £70,727 per annum.

Who are we?

It is an exciting time for TPO, with additional funding enabling a significant expansion of our staff numbers from around 110 to 140 and adopting new ways of working to manage an increased demand for our service.

As a totally independent body, not part of the pensions industry or government, we investigate and make decisions when someone has been unable to resolve a complaint about how their pension has been managed. Our service is free, but we have legal powers to make decisions that are final, binding and enforceable in court.

Our work can be challenging and high-profile, delivering a fair outcome for the individual and highlighting where the pensions industry can improve. Focusing on the facts, we must be balanced, fair and totally independent.

Responsibilities of our Lead Lawyer:

You will be part of an expanding in-house Legal Team that acts as primary legal advisers to all staff including the Pensions Ombudsman and the Executive and Corporate Boards. You will have the opportunity to be involved in and develop your skills in a wide range of work including:

  • Supporting and ‘signing off’ where appropriate legal advice on cases dealt with by the Lawyers and Senior Lawyers. Providing support and advice on legal, jurisdictional, procedural and regulatory issues which may arise on matters under investigation. Providing senior legal support to the pensions dishonesty unit. Progressing, advising and making recommendations to Senior Counsel on a range of policy matters, including internal policies and legislative change. Handle all allocated appeals, attend hearings where required, completing any follow-up work and where appropriate, instruct counsel to represent The Pensions Ombudsman – drafting formal instructions and liaising and supporting counsel. Participating in internal and external working groups. Providing some line management duties.

About You:

You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister who either holds a practising certificate in England and Wales or is eligible to apply for one.

If you have knowledge of pensions, legal or otherwise, this would be very desirable. Experience within one of the following areas would be an advantage: litigation, disputes resolution, regulatory law (preferably financial services regulation), criminal law or public law.

You will need first-class interpersonal, customer service and communication skills, both in writing and on the telephone and be able to interpret law and translate it in a way that is practical and jargon free. You will also have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and possess the ability to give presentations when necessary.

We will shortlist and interview on a rolling basis, without waiting for a set closing date. Therefore this vacancy may be withdrawn at short notice.

All applicants must have a right to work in the UK and be prepared to be security cleared to Baseline Personnel Security Standard, which requires a basic disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

TPO is a Disability Confident accredited employer.

If you feel that you have the skills and experience required to become our Lead Lawyer, please click ‘apply’ today. We would love to hear from you!
