SENIOR CROWN COUNSEL

(International Cooperation)

CI$101,436.00 – CI$109,236.00 per annum

Approx.  £99,780.00- £107,445.00

Senior Crown Counsel (International Cooperation) will be responsible for the management and implementation of the various forms of international legal assistance available through the ODPP to conduct criminal prosecutions and make ancillary applications arising out of international requests for assistance and to  conducting criminal prosecution in areas of commercial and financial crime.  Senior Crown Counsel (International Cooperation) will have a specialist focus on proceedings in respect of Mutual Legal Assistance, Letters Rogatory and all requests for International Judicial Assistance both incoming and outgoing.  Additionally, the post-holder will be assigned some 10 Court days each month in the course of which he/she will have conduct of at least three major criminal cases involving commercial or financial crime.   

The successful post holder will operate at all levels of the Court system, including the Cayman Islands’ Court of Appeal.  Senior Crown Counsel (International Cooperation) will be required to advise law enforcement agencies and Government Departments and Statutory Authorities.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience and Skills

Applicants for this position should be a Solicitor, Barrister or Attorney-at-Law qualified to practice in an English-speaking Commonwealth jurisdiction, or qualified to practice in the Cayman Islands in accordance with the Legal Practitioners Law (2015 Revision).  Applicants must also:

  • Possess a minimum of seven (7) years’ post qualification experience, to include significant experience in the processing of requests for international assistance, extradition and proceeds of crime;
  • Must have strong advocacy and case management skills and be able to effectively plead cases in and out of court settings before a judge or jury; 
  • Must have sound supervisory and human resource management skills;
  • Must have strong inter-personal skills to be able to effectively deal with witnesses and victims as well as accomplish desired results in normal business settings;
  • Must have effective skills in negotiating plea bargains; 
  • Must have the ability to assimilate instructions quickly, to conduct independent research, to give clear and accurate advice and to work within the relevant code of conduct for prosecutors; 
  • Must have excellent writing, legal research and analytical skills and be able to render prompt legal advice on very short notice and make decisions under pressure;
  • Must be able to mentor, coach and train; Must have good to excellent computer skills.
