London

Grade 7:  £50,500

Deadline: Midday on Wednesday 20th July 2022

Keep the UK safe and secure by taking on complex cases challenging government

The challenge

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life.

As the actions and decisions of government come under ever-increasing scrutiny and challenge, our litigation lawyers conduct a wide range of cases. These are often high-profile and frequently involve questions of constitutional importance. Litigation lawyers work closely with policy and advisory legal colleagues in client departments, to reduce exposure to litigation risk and develop contingency plans.

The role

You will join one of our Litigation Group National Security teams, which handle complex and highly sensitive cases. These might include immigration and statutory appeals, judicial reviews, challenges to asset freezing and financial restrictions, private law claims for damages, inquests and public inquiries. In cases involving national-security sensitive information, we also have unique roles based around ensuring litigation can be conducted without infringing individuals’ human rights. Our client departments include the Home Office, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Cabinet Office and HM Treasury, among others.

Government work is often novel and challenging and likely to involve a rapid learning curve when joining from private practice. However, we have a strong culture of collaboration and mutual support, and a thriving CPD accredited in-house training programme.

About you

Strong intellectual and analytical skills are important. We’re looking for lawyers qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales. As this post requires DV security clearance, you must be a UK citizen who has been resident in the UK for 10 years.

We’re keen that our workforce reflects the wider public that we serve and will train lawyers from all backgrounds, but you will need to demonstrate:

  • personal motivation to join our National Security Teams
  • sound understanding of public law and the role of lawyers in government
  • reliable legal judgement and an appreciation of legal risk
  • the ability to think strategically, creatively and analytically
  • a flair for communicating complexity clearly, honestly, sensitively and persuasively
  • the ability to build and maintain a collaborative network of colleagues
  • the confidence to challenge assumptions and the willingness to compromise

Ideally, you will have some experience of working in a litigation team or in a role relating to national security. You will certainly bring to our team a clear commitment to support the safety and security of the UK.

Benefits

GLD encourages its people to develop their skills and provides the opportunity to move between advisory, litigation, employment and commercial law services during your career, should you wish to do so. Other benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and, in this role, the opportunity to work from home 10% of the time.
