Lead unique and high-profile work for government

The Government Legal Department (GLD) provides legal advice to the primary Whitehall Government departments and public bodies on some of the most important projects in the UK. These issues are frequently reviewed and scrutinised in Parliament and by the media. From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life.

The Role

Since 2014, CLGp has been providing specialist commercial legal advice - creating a first of its kind service - and a single expert source across Government. As a Senior Commercial Transaction Lawyer at GLD you’ll lead, manage, develop and supervise the work of other lawyers within CLGp.

Our work also includes specialist support in litigation, employment and commercial law to a range of external departments and public bodies. You’ll play a key leadership role in a challenging and exciting professional environment. With clients ranging from the Home Office to the Department of International Trade, the Ministry of Defence to the Department for Health & Social Care, we offer a broad and unrivalled career with strong and ongoing development opportunities.

About you

With extensive and demonstrable commercial and contract law experience you’ll think creatively and strategically about a range of legal issues within a wider context and have proven experience of delivering advice accordingly. Your reliable judgement, analysis and appreciation of legal risk will pair with the confidence to give persuasive, balanced and strong risk-based advice.

Your excellent, well-rounded interpersonal skills will allow you to work comfortably at pace. Whether in your team or with internal and external stakeholders your pragmatic approach to developing strategies and delivering legal advice of the highest quality will ensure everyone is satisfied and confident in the organisation.

What you’ll receive

Working at GLD is going to be a constant and rapid learning curve. We offer a supportive and thorough career progression & development programme with opportunities to work in a number of legal areas and authorities. In return you can expect a competitive pay package, an excellent Civil Service Pension and 25 days’ holiday (plus an extra day off for the Queen’s Birthday).
