Commercial Property Lawyer

Lawyer, Business, Infrastructure and Treasury Division

Salary: £51,380 to £61,440

Location: Pan Wales

'Pan Wales' means that the location in which the vacancy can be based is flexible, subject to the needs of the business. A list of the Welsh Government's offices can be found on our website (www.wales.gov.uk). Please note it may not always be possible to accommodate a preference for a specific office location, but requests will be taken into consideration.

Most of our staff are however currently working remotely due to the pandemic. Whilst the precise post pandemic working arrangements are still under consideration, it is likely that such arrangements will see the normalisation of blended or hybrid “place of work” arrangement for many staff in the future.

The Legal Services Department within Welsh Government is seeking a number of highly talented lawyers to strengthen its capacity at a critical time in UK and Welsh affairs.  If you are attracted by working at the forefront of the law, Welsh Government would welcome your interest. You could be a lawyer at the start of your career, an experienced lawyer seeking to apply your skills in a new and different context, or attracted by an environment which offers and embraces flexible working arrangements.

With more than 100 lawyers and support staff, organised across a wide variety of subject areas, the Legal Services Department is the largest public sector legal department in Wales. It is responsible for the delivery of all legal services to the Welsh Ministers. The Department’s lawyers are at the heart of devolved government, playing a central role in the development of Welsh primary and secondary legislation and Welsh provision in UK legislation and advising on complex matters of public law, projects of national significance and major constitutional developments. The Welsh Government is in the midst of a period of unprecedented change and challenge and the Legal Services Department needs to, in addition to providing the legal support necessary to deliver the Programme for Government, undertake critical work on the response to, and recovery from, the COVID-19 pandemic.

The posts advertised are within the Property Team which sits within the Business, Infrastructure and Treasury Division.

If you have experience in one or more of the areas listed below and are attracted by the prospect of contributing to our response to the economic development challenges that we face at this critical time, whilst working within a supportive and flexible environment with ample opportunity to further develop your professional skills and experience, then the Welsh Government would welcome your interest.

The work of the Property Team is varied and wide ranging. We are therefore interested in hearing from lawyers who have skills and experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Acquisition and disposal of land and buildings. Development agreements. Leases and associated landlord and tenant matters. Easements and statutory infrastructure agreements. Grant agreements and legal charges. Public and private joint ventures. public / private partnerships and joint ventures.

Starting salary:

• With 3 or more years of post-qualification experience at offer: £51,380 (non-negotiable) and rising in stages over 3 years to £61,440;

Applications from those who have previously expressed an interest in joining the Welsh Government legal team would also be welcome.

We welcome and encourage applications from those currently underrepresented in our workforce, such as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people and disabled people.

For further details of these roles and our assessment criteria and process please read the advert on the Welsh Government website:

Mae ganddynt hefyd rôl ganolog wrth ddatblygu deddfwriaeth Gymreig sylfaenol ac is-ddeddfwriaeth, a darpariaethau ar gyfer Cymru yn neddfwriaeth y DU.  Mae Llywodraeth Cymru yng nghanol cyfnod o newid heriol a anrhagweladwy, ac yn ogystal a darparu y cymorth cyfreithiol sydd angen i gyflawni’r Rhaglen Lywodraeth, mae cyfreithwyr Llywodraeth Cymru hefyd yn ymgymryd gwaith holl bwysig i ymateb i’r bandemig Covid-19, ac ar yr adferiad o’r pandemig.

Company

The Welsh Government is the devolved Government for Wales. We are working to help improve the lives of people in Wales and make our nation a better place in which to live and work.

The Welsh Government consists of:

  • The First Minister
  • Welsh Ministers
  • The Counsel General
  • Deputy Ministers

They are supported by civil servants who work across devolved areas that include key areas of public life such as health, education and the environment.

We aim to be open and responsive to the needs of citizens and communities and are one of the few governments in the world that publishes Cabinet minutes and papers. Responsibility for most key areas of public life including health, education and environment is devolved.

With offices across Wales, including Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth and Llandudno Junction, we are getting closer to the people we serve.
