Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study and work right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Deputy University Secretary (Legal) to join our dynamic team. The role will suit an experienced solicitor looking to advance their career and lead the Legal Team.

Reporting to the University Secretary, you will manage the in-house legal team who provide advice and guidance on legal matters to all departments and faculties across the University and subsidiary companies. You will also be responsible for development of the legal services strategy. You will provide advice to the Board of Governors, Executive Team and Senior Managers; identify legal risks and present and support the implementation of pragmatic solutions.

You will be expected to lead the Legal team (including DPO and information management function) whilst also having conduct of a full and varied case load of legal matters.

You will be a qualified and flexible solicitor with the ability to acquire new areas of specialism and a successful track record of operating at a senior level to develop and implement an organisational wide legal strategy.    You will be able to demonstrate a mature leadership style along with the ability to influence others at a more senior level. Excellent written and verbal communications – especially the ability to provide concise and clear advice on complex litigation and compliance matters – are essential.

Experience of managing Higher Education legal issues is desirable (but not essential) with a strong practical understanding of the law coupled with the ability to identify and resolve problems to support the University moving forwards.
