Tax Lawyer

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Tax Lawyer to join a top 50 UK practice, in Birmingham.


The tax team in Birmingham are the focal point of a national tax practice spanning the firm’s six UK offices. The Birmingham tax team currently consists of one partner, one legal director, one senior associate, and one associate. They are seeking to bolster their offering to clients both nationally and overseas with the addition of an associate and senior associate, between three and eight years’ PQE.

The tax team in Birmingham work alongside their corporate, commercial, employment, and real estate colleagues advising on tax matters related to transactions undertaken by those teams, while also advising clients independently of their corporate, commercial, employment, and real estate colleagues.

The successful associate and senior associate joining this tax team in Birmingham will advise owner-managed businesses, listed companies, and international groups across the higher education, retail, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, financial services, healthcare, and public sectors.

In this role your work will be broad, complex, and challenging, advising on structuring and transactional matters relating to:
 

• Corporate Tax
  • UK and cross-border mergers and acquisitions
  • Vendor tax planning on UK scheme disposals
• Property Tax
  • Advising retailers, investors, and developers on freehold disposals, leases and lease renewals, VAT and SDLT
• Local Authorities
  • Public and private joint ventures
  • Outsourced service provision and mutuals
• Employee and management share incentives
  • Enterprise management incentive schemes
  • Bespoke and complex drafting around performance conditions and vesting arrangements
  • Company share option plans, and unapproved share option schemes

This position is ideally suited to candidates between three and eight years’ PQE. The team are less concerned about your academics and more interested in your character and your experience. Tax experience will be beneficial, but candidates from a corporate or commercial background with significant exposure to tax matters are welcome and encouraged to apply. Experience in the supervision and management of more junior colleagues is desired, as is experience in business development and client relationship management.
