Lawyer – Flood and Coastal Risk Management and Planning Team

Environment Agency

Exeter and Birmingham

Salary: £37,462

Join the legal team who help to manage the risks from floods and coastal erosion.

The work of the Environment Agency is vitally important to everyone in England. From air and water quality to conservation and ecology, we’re responsible for protecting wildlife and creating better places in which to live. With a focus on mitigating climate change and improving the environment wherever possible, we’re an ambitious organisation that is not afraid to take the boldest approaches, and it’s against this progressive background that you could develop a profoundly interesting career.

Right now we’re looking for a Lawyer to join our Area Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) and Planning Team. You’ll provide legal advice and support across a variety of legal issues affecting delivery of flood and coastal risk management, both on the ground and in relation to local flooding issues. You’ll also undertake a wide range of work from contractual drafting to dealing with planning and litigation issues arising from the schemes we deliver.

To be a success in this role you’ll be a fully qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive, possess the confidence and knowledge to advise at appropriate levels across the organisation, and have a track record of handling technical issues. Ready to show that you care deeply about the environment, ideally you’ll have some previous experience of advising in relation to flood risk. We’ll also expect you to be ready and willing to get up to speed quickly on new legal issues.

The role sits in a team of six based in our Exeter and Birmingham offices and works closely with other specialist lawyers in the wider Area FCRM and Planning team, and also with the National Flood Risk and Planning Team. If you’re an exceptional candidate with an outstanding skill set we’ll consider assigning you to a base at our other legal hub locations of Peterborough, Reading, Leeds, Warrington or Bristol.

We offer a generous benefits package that includes flexible working, 25 days of annual leave pro-rata, an award winning pension fund, enhanced maternity and paternity leave and a wide range of health, wellbeing, travel and transport benefits. We strive to reflect the communities we serve and continue to develop diversity throughout our workforce. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups.
