We are looking for a financial regulation lawyer to join a team based in London but you will be part of our national team and work with Partners and for clients across the UK and internationally. You will work closely with our whole sale and financial markets Partners to help grow the work and profile of this part of our practice. You will ideally already have a good grounding and knowledge of the financial regulation of wholesale markets, conduct issues, investments and financial instruments, brokers, funds, platforms, and exchanges and have had exposure to products targeted to the top tier of retail customers as well as other market products.  Some exposure to prudential and regulatory capital issues would be a plus.

Ideally you will have developed a strong knowledge of financial regulation in the UK, including FSMA and the FCA Handbook and have a good understanding of EU frameworks and how post Brexit divergence is trending.  You will have followed the evolution of the regulation of markets post  MIFID II. You may have worked on implementing EMIR and have knowledge and experience in the following areas: CRD IV, Bank recovery and resolution, Benchmark regulation, Banking structural reforms, and Market abuse / AML matters. Alternatively, you may have more capital markets or derivatives experience, but with a strong interest in and current awareness of financial regulation and be interested in developing as a regulatory lawyer.  

You will handle your own matters (with supervision) and assist the Partners and work with other Managing Associates and Associates on more complex matters, delivering high quality work to clients as well as helping to win new work. You can expect to have the opportunity to play a significant role in working for clients that are key to the Division and to the firm. As part of this you may have the opportunity to undertake client secondments to assist our clients and to build your skills and expertise further.

Our clients Financial Regulation Team is one of largest in the UK with a mix of lawyers and compliance professionals split over Leeds, London, and Scotland. The team is headed up by 7 Partners, 5 of which are based in London. The Financial Regulation team is independently recognised as first rate and having "client focus and a pragmatic approach in complicated situations".

The team advises on the full range of issues affecting financial services clients including Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA), Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules; the Building Societies Act; data protection; the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID); Treating Customers Fairly (TCF); and Retail Distribution Review (RDR). Other issues include anti-money laundering, consumer credit, insurance, conduct of business, customer documentation, e-commerce and advertising and marketing regulation. The team is continuing to build on their reputation of their consumer finance practice, payments practice and I snow focused on expanding its more wholesale and institutional regulatory practice, assisting clients to navigate the changing regulatory environment post Brexit, across the spectrum of regulations affecting banks, building societies and asset managers as the government moves forward with the Edinburgh reforms.  The team also advises on the   SMCR, conduct matters, bank prudential matters and on various issues around financial and operational stability, high level regulatory engagement, as well as supporting transactional, banking and funds structuring work. The service they provide is client centred and they consistently demonstrate real insight into their clients and what really matters to them.


Any successful applicant will need the following skills and competencies: 

  • You will have at least 3 years experience in a financial regulation team, post qualification.
  • Most importantly, you should have a real and genuine interest in this area and be keen to grow that knowledge in a proactive way.
  • You should be adept at in building strong client relationships, but also like working in a team.
  • Our ideal candidate should have a keen intellect and a commercial mindset. You will be able to demonstrate that you are able to provide pragmatic and tailored advice in a way that supports internal and external clients alike.
  • The ability to actively support complex transactions, liaising and coordinating with fee earners from other relevant disciplines as needed
