Want to help shape the priorities of your professional body on climate change?
Over the past two years, the Law Society has developed a leading position on climate change issues for legal associations internationally.
We have three vacancies for members to join our climate change working group, to help advance this position and address the challenges facing the legal profession when it comes to climate change. We would be particularly keen to encourage applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic solicitors as well as young solicitors.
The working group cover a variety of different topic areas within the field of climate change and sustainability, including:
- Ethical and regulatory issues
- Greenwashing claims
- How climate change is impacting different areas of the law
- Sustainability disclosure and reporting requirements
- Capacity building of the profession.
Its work in the past 12 months has included publishing our climate change guidance, which is the first of its kind for solicitors, on how climate change impacts their ethical and professional duties and how law firms in England and Wales can transition to net zero.
We would particularly welcome applications from those whose experience is currently less well-represented on the working group, namely:
- In-house solicitors
- Solicitors who are employed by public bodies
- Solicitors from large law firms based in the City of London
- Solicitors from small/medium sized firms Solicitors with expertise on the UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights
- Solicitors with expertise on biodiversity (particularly the Taskforce of Nature Related Financial Disclosures Recommendations)
By joining the climate change working group, you can apply your expert insight into helping us identify key priorities for the profession and make sure our work is focused on the issues that matter to our members most.
The Law Society amplifies the powerful collective voice of more than 200,000 solicitors.
We advocate for our members, whether that’s lobbying the government on key legislation and reform, advocating for access to justice and the rule of law, leading the way on professional ethics, or engaging with regulators.
To apply, you’ll need to send your CV and a 250-word personal statement to PRACAppointments@lawsociety.org.uk.
Applications are open until 2nd December 2023.
