This is an exciting opportunity to join a unique law firm at an early stage of its development, and to help establish Practice as a go to firm for organisations that seek to make a positive and practical change to the world.

The role requires a qualified solicitor, who has some experience of running their own litigation. We offer excellent training and supervision where needed and the opportunity to progress. We are interested in hearing from lawyers who have a public law background and an interest in environmental law. We are also interested to hear from candidates who have other additional specialisms, including corporate accountability, international law, housing, education, protest, and civil rights.

The successful candidate will be proactive, have a sense of adventure, and feel comfortable within a dynamic, rapid-paced environment. The full job description and person specification is located at the end of this job pack.

If you are a lawyer with a passion for the environment, for working with organisations to achieve their purpose, and ambitious to establish Practice as a force in the world, we invite you to join our team and contribute to making a lasting contribution to the future of the planet.

How to apply: Please send us one 3-page document consisting of:

  • Your CV (max one page)
  • Your covering letter of no more than two pages outlining: why you are interested in the role
    • How you meet the requirements
    • What motivates you to work at Good Law Practice
    • How your skills and experience would make you a suitable candidate whether you consider yourself to have a disability or not
    • Where you found out about the job opportunity
    • Include details of two referees
    • Your current notice period
    • Your availability for interviews which are likely to take place during week commencing 25 March 2024

We ask all candidates to send their 3-page document to lparker@goodlawpractice.com using the subject heading, “Public Law Solicitor". The deadline for application is 11.59pm 24 March 2024.

Interview details: We intend to hold interviews for short-listed candidates in person where possible on 27 and 28 March 2024, with the likelihood of second interviews to follow. If you are not available on those days, please let us know in your covering letter. Please check your junk mail for emails from Good Law Practice as well as your main inbox.

Encouragement of equal opportunity and reasonable adjustments: We welcome and encourage applicants from all backgrounds and do not discriminate on the basis of age, disability, LGBT or relationship status, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex, or social class. We particularly welcome applications from racialised ethnic groups and those with lived experience of disadvantage.

We guarantee to interview all applicants who consider themselves to have a disability provided they meet the essential criteria for the role. If this applies to you, please flag that you have a disability in your cover email, and we will contact you to check if there are any adjustments or special arrangements that you need to help you with either the application process or for an interview.

Company

About Good Law Practice

We defend, define, and change the law to protect the environment, uphold democracy, and ensure no one is left behind.

Good Law Practice is a not-for-profit law firm that uses the law for a better world. We are independent and SRA-regulated. We are a relatively new organisation with a friendly, energetic, and motivated team. We are hiring a defamation law specialist to join us as a pivotal member of our legal team, playing a vital role in defending the voices of activists against threats from wealthy individuals or corporations while actively countering attempts to stifle public participation.

The Practice was set up by Good Law Project (GLP), who retain ownership. GLP is our main client, but we also act for other clients in the NGO, campaign, and Not for Profit sectors. GLP is a not-for-profit campaign organisation which uses the law to hold power to account, protect the environment, and ensure no one is left behind. GLP had a primary role in overturning the prorogation of Parliament in 2019, shone a bright light on the Government’s awarding of lucrative Covid contracts to their friends and associates, and is working with activists who are being silenced in the Crown Courts and being subjected to injunction proceedings.

Good Law Practice shares the GLP’s values of bravery, honesty and decisiveness and is similarly committed to the highest possible standard of ethical conduct in all its activities."
