Senior Lawyers

Salary: £64,492 - £71,658

Location: Stratford, London / Hybrid

Our vision is safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery practice that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As the independent regulator of more than 826,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have an important role to play in making this a reality.

About the roles

We have a mixture of roles available including permanent and FTC contracts in our screening and major investigations teams.

Screening - The screening team is the first stage in the NMC’s fitness to practise process. In this role you’ll be the department’s sole senior lawyer where you’ll be considering the concerns raised about our registrants and advising whether regulatory action is required or if further information is needed before a decision can be made. This is a vital role, with significant individual responsibility for ensuring we make high quality screening decisions at the earliest opportunity. You’ll be responsible for providing advice in line our screening guidance and relevant legal authorities on some of our most complex and challenging cases. You will have a significant role to play in advising colleagues on the necessary enquiries that are required to make an informed and evidence-based decision.

Major Investigations - The major investigations team advise on and progress some of the NMC’s most high profile and complex fitness to practise cases. The team is made up of a variety of colleagues in legal and non-legal roles. You will be responsible for ensuring that a high-quality service is delivered that supports us to meet our statutory objectives of protecting the public and upholding confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. This will involve oversight and supervision to ensure the quality of advice and support provided by the team. You’ll directly provide legal advice to senior and executive level colleagues and work with a broad range of colleagues across the organisation, including working with our media team.

About You

You’ll be a confident and knowledgeable lawyer with significant casework experience, preferably in professional regulation. You’ll have experience of senior stakeholder engagement and influence that will support you to ensure timely case progression. You will be a confident communicator, with a track record of leading a team and developing colleagues through coaching.
