GOVERNMENT LEGAL DEPARTMENT

Head of the Legal Delivery Division

Locations: London, Bristol, Leeds or Manchester with regular travel to London if based outside

Salary: £76,000

Much more than law.

Who we are

At the Government Legal Department (GLD), we’re responsible for providing legal guidance on issues that really matter. As the largest provider of legal services to the Government, we offer support on issues ranging from human rights to social care, and from education to the environment. Working with every key department in Whitehall, nearly 3,000 team members collaborate to handle issues that impact on every aspect of society.

Whether developing and drafting legislation, providing guidance on policies, driving value from contracts or bolstering economic and trade relationships with national and international partners, this is deeply meaningful work that other employers simply cannot match. Join us, and you’ll enjoy all the support you need to deliver the best possible results for people from every walk of life.

The role

When you join us in this important senior role, you’ll shape and deliver our new Legal Delivery Division, and play a pivotal role in defining its structure, processes and operations. Designed to enhance our corporate capabilities and help front-line lawyers provide a service of the highest quality, your leadership will play a key part in creating a modern and efficient support infrastructure that boosts efficiency, frees up capacity, and helps make GLD a brilliant place to work. Collaborating closely with a diverse range of colleagues, you’ll work to optimise external legal support by leveraging relationships with private sector legal firms, support our own lawyers with compliance and quality assurance, and help drive the development of future-proof systems and processes.

But your work won’t stop here – we’ll expect you to provide support on a number of legal projects, support efficiencies by facilitating the smooth and flexible allocation of resources to meet localised business needs, and use data and metrics to inform strategies, improve performance and plan for the future. You’ll also help to set and drive the agenda around our use of innovative legal tech and systems, be instrumental in fostering the growth and development of your colleagues, and work towards building a high-performing, diverse Division that is ready to support GLD in achieving its strategic goals.

About you

To be a success in this role you’ll have substantial experience of leading, developing or transforming a substantial support function, ideally within a legal setting. You should possess a track record of improving service effectiveness, efficiency and value for money, and the leadership skills necessary to inspire and empower professional staff and support the development of talent. It’s vital that you have an excellent understanding of legal enterprise software, tools and applications, including those that manage external spend, and a good working knowledge of project and programme management.

Your inspirational communication and interpersonal skills will allow you to build positive and collaborative partnerships with senior leaders, influence and engage your peers, and build trust with everyone you work with. We’ll expect you to be comfortable managing a wide range of workloads and resources across a multi-disciplinary team, and in addition to your superb budget management skills, you should be capable of gathering, understanding and utilising information to support a data driven approach. When it come to qualifications, we’ll expect you to be educated to degree level or possess equivalent experience, and you should also have a strong commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity and to the core Civil Service values of integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality.

If successful you must hold, or be willing to obtain, security clearance to SC level.

In return, we can offer you a competitive benefits package that includes a generous contributory pension scheme, 25 days of annual leave rising to 30 after 5 years’ service (plus 8 public holidays) and a range of extras such as parental leave, season ticket and bicycle loans. With flexible working arrangements so that you can seamlessly blend your career and lifestyle, you will find much to enjoy at the Government Legal Department.
