What does a commercial property solicitor do?

Commercial property solicitors are tasked with helping businesses trade and negotiate commercial agreements involving the distribution, manufacture and sale of goods and services. A commercial solicitor may be involved in many types of property-based transactions. Generally, junior solicitor commercial property job roles will involve work on drafting contracts and documents and will handle smaller value properties, while more senior property solicitors will tend to handle higher property transactions.

What skills do I need to become a commercial property solicitor?

To succeed within a commercial property job role, you will need to have a thorough understanding of the laws and regulations that govern property, and an ability to articulate complex laws and terminology to clients. Commercial property solicitors must have strong negotiation and communication skills to effectively manage clients, as well as an ability to accurately collate and present information.

What qualifications do I need to become a commercial property solicitor?

There are three main routes to becoming a commercial property solicitor. Most solicitors qualify through a graduate programme followed by a Legal Practice Course for one year.

The second route is for non-law graduates. Non-law graduates must undergo a law conversion course in the form of either the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). The final route is the CILEx. This route is longer than the former two routes and takes a minimum of five years to complete. Finally, commercial property solicitors will also be required to pass the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) exams. Those who have already qualified as a solicitor will not be required to sit additional exams but will still need to apply to the CLC for a licence.
