What is the role of a paralegal in a criminal case?

The role of a criminal paralegal is similar to the duties of other paralegals in that they will provide administrative support to lawyers such as drafting, filing and reviewing case files. There are certain aspects of a criminal paralegal’s role that will differ to the role of other paralegals. The main difference is that a criminal law paralegal will work with lawyers who either prosecute or defend individuals of accused crimes. For example, a criminal law paralegal may be involved in negotiating bail arrangements, communicating with prisons and probation officers and gathering evidence for criminal cases.

The national average salary of a criminal paralegal is £23,507 per year in the United Kingdom. Junior paralegals at non-graduate entry level will typically expect to earn a salary in the range of £18,000 to £22,000. Law graduates can expect to earn a starting salary between £18,000 to £25,000. More experienced criminal paralegals working in large cities or high street firms can expect a salary of £40,000 and above.*
