What is the role of a solicitor?
A solicitor serves to represent and defend a client’s legal interests and provide expert legal advice. The tasks of a solicitor will vary depending on their area of practice. For example, a solicitor may work with individuals selling their house, relationship breakdowns, or helping businesses with commercial transactions.
The daily tasks of a solicitor’s job role may include:
- Drafting and preparing legal documents
- Conducting research into legal cases
- Providing legal advice for clients
- Some solicitors may represent their clients in court as an advocate
- Providing pro bono help for people unable to pay for legal services
How do you become a solicitor?
There are various routes you can take toward qualifying as a solicitor; however, the traditional route is as follows:
- Obtain a law degree or an alternative undergraduate degree followed by the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).
- The Legal Practice Course (LPC)
- Period of recognised training (2 years)
- Admission to the Roll of Solicitors
What skills are generally required for a solicitor job role?
The qualities of successful solicitors generally include:
- Ability to communicate clearly - Solicitors will often have to explain complex legal concepts and actions to clients who may not have a solid understanding of the law.
- Attention to detail – Solicitors will have to ensure all legal documentation is proof-read and accurate.
- Motivation – It is crucial that administrative work is carried out accurately and to a high standard of quality; Motivation for the role and the wider cause is therefore essential to the job.
How much do solicitors earn on average in the UK?
On average, newly qualified solicitors can earn between £30,000-60,000 depending on the firm and the location. Those working in London can expect to earn higher, the average salary for an experienced solicitor in London can earn anywhere from £40,000 to well over £100,000 a year.
